UPI was established on 20 October 1954 under the name Teacher Education and Training Colleges (PTPG). On 25 October 1958, PTPG became a Faculty of Education of Padjadjajaran University (UNPAD). On 1 May 1963, FKIP and other Teacher Education Institutes merged into the Institute for Teacher Training and Pedagogy (IKIP Bandung) with the main responsibility of preparing junior and senior high school teachers.
